Default Open air yurt

Has anyone ever assembled a modern yurt package without the side walls? I am thinking of keeping the top cover and

dome

– and having doors attached to the lattice walls – but leaving off the side walls, so that the yurt essentially has “open” walls, perhaps covered with insect netting. I understand the side walls play a structural role in tying the top cover down to the foundation, so that would have to be overcome. Perhaps the top cover could be secured to the lattice wall? Or it could be connected to the foundation with straps?

You basically have a giant parachute at that point. A strong wind would twist the infrastructure like a pile of twigs. My advice is to stick to roll up walls if you want that kind of air flow. They can be lifted or secured back to typical walls in strong winds.

The yurt isn't a square post and beam structure. It is circular and needs a full wall to transfer roof load to the floor.

Hawaii yurts comment about roof twisting in a high wind can cause the yurt to fail. Resisting wind twist is a big reason why I like my rafters inserted into slots in the ring. That one detail resists twist in a big way.

Yurt lath is extremely redundant and is a superb design for supporting roof load, in conjunction with a cable or tension band at the top of the wall.
