Default yurt insurance

Hello,

My husband and I are considering our next home to be a yurt. We are planning to relocate to western NC and are wondering if there are any other yurt dwellers on here from that area. I am wondering about temperatures in the summer, obtaining home

insurance

, and all around general long term, full time livability. Ideally, we'd like to be on several acres and would like to be hooked up to a septic and electric.

If you have any leads, especially on the home

insurance

front, I'd really appreciate any info. Not being able to obtain home insurance might be a deal breaker on the yurt dream so I really hope it exist!

The underwriter for my insurance plan is Midrox. I would work with a local insurance agent and mention that someone has gotten yurt insurance through that company before. Chances are, they work with Midrox too. It is a pretty large company.

If you email us at [email protected] we can put you in touch with someone who has been living in her Pacific Yurt for about a decade in North Carolina.

There are a few places who will insure yurt homes. Often times they want it to be fully permitted as a residence in order to insure. The trick is finding the right agent who is willing to do the work to track down the underwriters. Good tip, Jafo!

Well, I did some digging on home insurance and as far as I can find, getting home insurance for a yurt isn't possible in NC. However, could we insure the yurt as a garage or storage unit? And could we insure our contents inside through a renters insurance policy or contents policy? There's got to be a way to insure the structure and the stuff inside of it. Right?

Thank you in advance for your feedback!
