Yes, you can live in national forest -not national forest campgrounds- at no cost to you. We citizens all own it. HOWEVER, the stipulation is you must move every two weeks. You can't squat on the land indefinitely, or damage or change the surroundings in any fashion. You can't raise crops or build any dwelling. A small yurt like a 12'er would be perfect and easy to move every two weeks. Of course you can also live out of your vehicle too. I did both in my early 20s for several months. Good luck

one of our customer had her yurt set-up in a trailer park Julian CA, and then in Yosemite. She found it a easy alternative avoiding by-laws...
