Default Looking to create co-op homestead

Hello! I am looking for others that might be interested in creating a co-operative yurt community that attempts to be as sustainable as possible.

Any and all input is needed and welcome. Currently I have been looking at western North Carolina as a possible place to acquire land but I might not be thinking out of the box enough. Colorado, Oregon, Nevada?

I think to be as sustainable as possible, I would try for a sunny location that is dry like Nevada. Yurts are temperamental in humid cold conditions. Just my 2 cents.

Agree with Jafo. Colorado is very dry, but not quite as warm as NV. Yurt here in CO do VERY well.

Bob, Where in Colorado are you at?
Why are yurts so temperamental in those conditions?

I live on the front range of the rockies. You know....Broncos country. Canvas yurt covers are prone to mold and mildew. The climate here in this state and all through the western U.S. is semi arid to arid. That is a good environment for canvas based on my yurt. However even as dry as it is here, we had several straight weeks of unseasonal rain last May and June. My cover has mildewed somewhat. I suggest if you seriously consider a yurt to get a professionally made fifteen year cover from one of the suppliers here on Jafos site. Good luck.

Hi Onaps,

We are forming a cooperative, ecological community in central Carolina, Piedmont region (looking at land in a 45 minute radius of Durham). Different folks are interested in different dwelling styles, all with an emphasis on resilience and affordability. We're dreaming of a yurt, ourselves
