Default Insuring a yurt in Canada

Hi all. Just moved into my new 30 foot Great Lakes yurt yesterday. I tried to put

insurance

on it but my local

insurance

broker can't find anyone that will insure it. Any other Canadians out there have insurance on theirs? If so who is your insurer. Thanks

DV

Hi. My husband and I just moved into our 32’, off-grid yurt in Northwestern Ontario. We have just come through the insurance hell. We finally got decent insurance through Standard Insurance Brokers in Kenora. We are paying a lot, but at least we have insurance. It is commercial insurance of some sort. You may want to call them and see if it is what you are looking for. Best of luck!

I was not that far from Kenora last month. Hunting up in Dryden.

Hi All,

We are in Southern Ontario and would be interested in Insuring, too. Any luck with this?

Hi Nicholas. I have had some contact with the people that Swykes has used. They seem receptive enough but I haven't actually signed up for anything yet. Mostly because I haven't gotten around to supplying them with the pictures they asked me to send. I know, I know, just need to do it. I'm dragging my feet because I want to present it in the best possible light and it's still in its unfinished state. I rushed to get it so it was liveable and it is and we're loving it but nothing is "finished". Anyway, I'd love to know where in SW Ontario you are and how you're getting along with yours. Especially in this coooooold weather.

Hello, I’m Nick.
I just finished signing the completion papers on an “Off Grid” Yurt on 7 acres. As I’m signing, I find that the mortgage company at the last second requested a Certificate of Insurance in order to approve the loan. I’ll try Standard Insurance Brokers but I’m guessing that it won’t fly because I’m in BC. If anyone in BC has found insurance brokers that deal in BC I’d certainly be thankful for a contact person’s name, otherwise the sale will die on the Lawyer’s desk.

If you are in BC, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding insurance. Yurts are much more prevalent there, and insurance is easier to find. Best of luck!

Nick, that sucks. Sounds to me like someone dropped the ball somewhere. In my limited experience banks have every last piece of everything in front of them on the table before closing. They advise you beforehand. That only makes sense. The transaction is completed on the spot and they get paid then and there. jme and as I said it is just a few times.
