Re: Toilet ideas

Oh. One more “pro” tip. An oval of closed cell foam (cheap, blue, camping pad) cut to fit your toilet seat makes an outside toilet very comfortable. Even when it’s -10 F outside. Mine “lives”...

Re: Toilet ideas

I do think things change (are way harder) with a toddler, so you need to do what works best for you and your family. But The Humanure Handbook by Joe Jenkins (written in the 70’s and still an amazing...

Re: Firewood

Check out Zelig posts! I think they have a 22’ Groovy Yurt and it seems it waaay more efficient than our Americanized yurts. 15-20 cords! Yikes. That a full time job!

Re: Firewood

I live full time in my 24’ White Mt Yurt in NH and only use maybe 4 cords. BUT. I don’t try and keep it 70 degrees 24/7. (Lots and lots of posts here discussing my “system”. Lol. Sometimes it’s 80...

Re: Keeping uninsulated yurt cool during South Florida summer

Hi Damion. Any sun you can keep off the yurt is helpful. Unfortunately with the high ceilings, general draftiness, and small amount of thermal mass, I think it’s tough to seal things up enough to...

Woods only slightly better.

Re: Yurt platform

The less stuff and vegetation I have around and under the yurt for them to hide and move safely about, the fewer mice, IMO. Also keep any food they might like in glass jars. Dirty dishes in a closed...

Re: Yurts and energy consumption (Firewood)

Zelig, you forgot the heated/cooled seats in vehicles! To bridge those formally uncomfortable seconds between the warm/ac home and when the car heat/ac gets going! Lol.

Actually. And here I go...

Re: Spiritual evolution in the yurt

Sometimes in the morning when first waking up, I imagine I’m living under a mushroom. Not sure why that makes me happy. Just whimsical and close to nature, I guess.

Re: Yurts and energy consumption (Firewood)

Zelig.

Berm?!? No disrespect, but I’d say you are 1/2 way to igloo territory! Lol. Awesome though. Maybe that is something to consider when designing a yurt in cold areas, a lower platform. ...

Re: Questions About Building a Maine Yurt

And here I was going to suggest looking into a straw bale system. Lol. At least for a few years until you got settled, lumber came down, see if you like yurt living. Someone on this forum did that...

Re: Add 2nd door to existing yurt

I bought my 24’ yurt used and it had two doors. Very lucky because I know I would not have sprung for the second door. I now think a second door is pretty important safety wise. Even if you never...

Re: Cheap window coverings

Update on the (somewhat) homemade windows. The boat upholstery shop that sewed the windows for $50 each did an okay sewing job. It was a bit rough. But I put the windows up and so far all is good....

Re: How to spread stresses across dome, keep it in place?

Skihuskster. Welcome! And sorry for your dome loss. :( I think increasing wind is something we all have to consider given the crazy weather. Anything one does may be the best insurance Securing...

Re: Yurt vapor barriers to combat mould

To be clear, I don’t have moisture or mold problems. Just an observation after I had washed the dome. There is often a frost/condensation layer on the dome, but it always just evaporated. It never...

Re: Heat Storage Idea

Hey Froit1,

Sorry. All the “someone has responded to your comment” emails went to spam for some reason and I just now found them.

Anyway. I heat the gallon of water on a 2-burner Colman...

Re: Heat Storage Idea

Wow. I can barely follow this conversation. Lol. Much less embracing it as an option (different strokes for different folks). If anything, I’ve gone simpler over my years of yurt living. From a 3...

Re: Yurt vapor barriers to combat mould

A possibly interesting side note. I’m going on 9 years living full-time in a cold, often wet climate (NH). This fall I finally hauled out the ladder to wash the dome on the inside. Went well. But...

Re: Best Jurisdictions for Yurt/Off Grid Living

You will probably have to work backwards. Find the areas that don’t have zoning and then look for land. And - unfortunately - even if you see a yurt in an area, you can’t assume yurts are okay...

Re: Cheap window coverings

My windows became so brittle and yellowed after about 8 years (in full sun), I replaced them myself. Bought vinyl at JoAnn Fabrics (mistake - those lasted less than two years before cracking apart). ...

Re: Land/place to up up a yurt in Maine

There is a whole community in Maine inspired by Bill Coperthwaite. They build wooden yurts, but might also be a good resource.

Re: Looking for yurt experts as consultants

Agreed TXRalex. There’s a right way to do things and (many) wrong ways. Often it doesn’t matter all that much. But not with yurts. When the wind is blowing 40mph with gusts of 60, I’m very glad...

Re: Looking for yurt experts as consultants

mahendra,

With all due respect, how do you know you can make a yurt for $1500us if you don’t know all “the small details”? A long term yurt company might say this $500 hardware detail is...
