Pacific Yurt Gutters

Hi,
We bought the gutter system that came with our Pacific Yurt. 24ft. We are having a debate on whether putting the gutters up is a good idea. Our yurt is in northern Washington State up in the woods. Winters are fairly mild, doesn't freeze more than a couple times a year, though it can be very rainy and windy. I think they will protect the outer canvas from all the dirty water running down the sides. My son said he thinks they would be difficult to clean and it's hesitant to cut into the canvas in any way. Thoughts ? Thanks

I suggest talking to Pacific about the gutter they sold you.

Side note. You mentioned canvas cover. Are you sure your roof cover is canvas?

If you have a 10-15 year warranty on the cover it absolutely is not any 'canvas' I am familiar with. The 15 year cover I have seen and touched on a commercially made yurt is WAY more substantial than any canvas. 'DO NOT' proceed with making any cuts in that cover without knowing what you are doing.

Good luck.

@Kasnyku If you can reach the gutters, they debris can simply be scooped out with your hand. If your yurt platform is elevated, you'll have to work from a ladder, but the procedure would be the same. I assume the cut you refer to is the small horizontal cut through the inner valance of your top cover, which allows the hanger brackets to mount onto the rafters. Don't worry, this will not cause any additional wear on the fabric over time and cannot cause any leakage because the inner valance is completely covered by the outer valance. This cut became necessary when we added the inner valance to our top covers in 2001. Our perimeter gutter system has been available since 1998, so it has been very well tested.

Thanks Pacific.

Thank you. I misspoke. The cover is not canvas.

I guess my question is whether the gutters are necessary. What is their main purpose? Keeping the sides of the yurt clean? Tx

The main purpose of all gutters is to direct the flow of water. There are many reasons why one might do this, soil erosion, rainwater capture, etc..

In addition to what Jafo said, the gutters will indeed keep your side cover clean longer since the runoff from the roof will no longer run down your side cover.
