If you have bears wreaking that much havoc, then you have bears that are too comfortable with humans.
Bears are attracted by more things than human food. Sometimes they will chew on a tire if it has recently driven through salt. They will dig through things if they contain bugs like ants or bees (well, which are technically food).
Brown bears are different than black bears btw, so my experience ends at black bears.
The biggest problem to date with any creatures has been mice and with subtle poison, we have taken care of that to a high degree.

I don't doubt this bear or bears are comfortable with humans. I had a big city kid excitingly tell me how he was feeding one fried chicken. I wanted to scream! But, that said... a good friend of mine, who builds yurts and had a number of them set up in the Idaho backcountry for ski touring, also had problems with black bear. His solution was to leave the doors open so they wouldn't rip through the cover trying to get in. But... he didn't really have much inside his, other than wood bunks, table, etc. If I left my door open like that, the bear could have all kinds of fun... and I'd have birds and mice taking up residence.
