Re: Yurt cost calculator
I have no idea how much reeds cost! LOL, that being said, some people were talking earlier about using straw bales:
http://www.yurtforum.com/forums/buil...-yurt-341.html
That gentlemen who put up the link to the reeds photos builds them all the time from scratch. Here is his site:
http://jurten.heimat.eu/
He does speak English too. He may be able to give you some ideas there as it looks like many of his structures have some of the same goals in mind (lower costs).

{Smack My Head}!! I totally forgot to recommend this guy to you. LOL! If you get in contact with him, let him know we sent you there. I don't think he understands fully how the forum works because he was posting threads in the My Yurt section, but anyway good luck!

Re: Yurt cost calculator
I use 15-2x6x8 ft. I use 2x6 because you find clearer lumber (less knots). 300-5/16 nuts bolts and washers. I buy these from Tractor supply by the pound. about 15 dollars. for the wall and door frame I spend about 105.00 and some change. for a 20x20 12oz. cotton canvas duct. 160.00. and a 7x20 and a 7x30 pvc Curtains from those white garages you see here and there. 50.00. 32-1x3's and a sheet of 3/4 plywood. then you need plywood for the door or what ever you want to make that out of. When I move it I just roll it up like a big burrito and tie it like that. when the lattice is stretched out it's 50 foot long. And 6ft tall. this how I built and covered the yurt in my album posted here.

Re: Yurt cost calculator
Marshall, thanks! It's great to actually hear some folks attaching a cost to their projects.
One of the things I was thinking about to save money on the most complex part of the project was repurposing an old, bald tire as a crown wheel--drill some holes into it and boom, done. Anybody want to tell me if/why this would be a bad idea?
