Default Wood Stove Installation

I recently erected two 16' Yurts from Secret Creek (formerly Colorado Yurt) and am exploring the best method for installing a wood burning stove. I have not selected a stove yet.

I ordered the stove pipe accessory from Secrete Creek which is basically two large pieces of heavy flashing that screw in together with a large velcro piece of the exterior wall material on one side. Secret creek recommends installing the pipe through the wall which will require cutting out a section of the lattice.

Speaking with my local wood stove company, they do not recommend going out the wall given my elevation (8500ft) and the new types of stoves. They feel the ninety degree will create too much negative pressure and smoke out the yurt.

Has anyone on here gone straight vertical through the roof of your yurt? I imagine the piping can braced to the rafters for support. Any feedback is appreciated and if you have any stove suggestions, that's welcome as well. Jotul is one of the brands I'm currently looking at.

Thanks!
Matt

I have not gone through the roof, but I advise against cutting any hole in your roof. If you are going to do this, go through the

center ring

. Cutting a hole in your roof will basically void your roof warranty.

What Jafo said.

My stack runs straight up through the ring. If you go that route I recommend you extend the pipe 4' above the ring. And only burn seasoned wood. And have a spark arrestor installed at the apex of the pipe.

Why 4'? I'm going into my second season with my rebuilt 12' 6" yurt. Last season the pipe extended only 2' above the yurt. It did have a spark arrestor. However I still got a few dozen ember burn holes in the poly tarp cover.

Plenty of larger yurts have a stove pipe that exits through a side wall. You'll need to research that yourself. I know absolutely >nothing< about exiting a pipe through a yurt side wall. So no comment.

Good luck
