Default Sunforger Canvas Source

Hi everyone - I am about to begin construction of my first yurt, 20', which is to be a permanent dwelling in central NY state. After doing some research, it seems that sunforger canvas is the way to go. I found a source for 13oz, flame retardant that I would like to share with you. Please know that I am not affiliated with this company, and I receive no benefit from sharing this, other than knowing I may have helped someone on the way to their dream home : )

Best wishes,

Joe

Joe,

I have edited your thread a bit. While we do discuss yurt manufacturers and supporting industries and their products, I try to keep blatant advertising out of the forums. We welcome the company you purchased your fabric from to join our forum here and talk about their products and services and we also have no problem with anyone talking any product they purchased. We just don't want the forums being used as a billboard.

Thanks!

- Jeff

Most of the commercial yurt manufacturers go with

Duro-last

, but I am not sure if that is an option for someone building their own yurt from scratch. Please update us on your progress when you get time.

Hi Joe,
Im building a yurt too and was looking at the same canvas. I was wondering how it went for you and if you had any tips or suggestions on making the cover.
Thanks, Ed

There are alternatives to 100% canvas. A 50:50 blend of polyester and cotton is an option. I used cheap canvas painters tarps for the wall of my yurt and they are that blend. Porous as all get out but have held up better than the 100% cotton canvas roof cover. I left a post on your other thread about 'My Tarp'.

Other materials. Sunbrella, which is a synthetic material that is used for boat covers. Beats me how long that's gonna last. Painting a straight canvas tarp might be the best idea. Just a guess though never done it.

If I was planning on living in my yurt full time, I'd either buy a 15 year cover from a professional yurt manufacturer, or redo what I did with the canvas tarp, but paint it with 50:5 paint water ratio.

Moisture

trapped inside a drafty yurt like mine ain't gonna happen.

That's all I have. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Bob! If I were to go the route of buying a professional cover, do they just match my yurt dimensions or do they have standard sizes? Also, I read on your other reply that you used a 17oz canvas tarp. I'm not sure what the actual difference is, but the websites I've been looking at suggest a 10-12oz cotton canvas. Is there a difference in equipment needed for sewing? and is 10-12oz overkill?
Thanks again

Surely Yurts

I believe will sew you a custom vinyl cover (if they are not booked solid already). Some of the other ones do it too. I believe

Rainier Yurts

does it too as they were a canvas/cover company before they built yurts.

As far as canvas weight goes, pro wall tent companies use 10-12 oz. double fill canvas, so I'd think it would work perfect on any nomadic yurt. My cloth was 17 oz AFTER the water treatment.

Heavy duty canvas is a bugger to sew with a standard sewing machine designed for clothes. I'm stubborn as hell but I absolutely will NEVER do that again with a dink machine. If you decide to make the cover yourself, rent a commercial grade sewing machine. I used heavy polyester thread and a canvas rated needle.

You also need to learn how to sew a lap fell seam. Plenty youtube vids on that. Good luck.
