2x10 nailed to a house as a deck ledger board is one thing. 2x10 spanning 8 feet with joists every 2 feet is absurdly off code. Two 2x10 would be rustic with todays lumber that is wide grained checked and wany. Five IS overkill, three is perfect for that span and load unless you have really superb lumber Stagger the joints and face nail three every 16". Use hand drives to swat the joint shut and start pulling the trigger. Guns don't close gaps. That's why so much framing today is mediocre.

Hello, I'm cutting on this post as we are looking for info about measurements for cutting planks to build a wooden base for a 6.5 m Mongolia yurt. We will ask the Mill to cut them for us as the land is off grid. Has anyone got measurements or can direct us?We are using rammed earth tyres underneath. Thinking about making an octagonal slat base with two pairs of parallel diagonals. Then planks on top. Have been using pythagoras alot. But worried about making it too big or small. Thanks in advance Rosie and Jon

Draw the framing plan to scale on 1/4" graph paper. Start by drawing a scaled 6.5 meter circle. Lay in the framing atop that circle. Just pencil it on there. Play around with the layout. If you have a carpente friend talk with them.

Without a basic floor framing diagram I couldn't begin to venture a guess as to the lengths of any framing. You can also google yurt framing plans on images, or ask a yurt company that sponsors this site. Good luck.

You guys ever hear of a drop in?you drill a hole the size of your drop in place the drop in in the hole set it with the set tool.then you can bolt what ever you like to it. Drop ins come in sizes from 3/8 all way up to 5/8. These things can take a lot of weight without pulling free.

Thanks to all that responded. The deck was completed- the platform added and the yurt up! It took three weeks but got er' done. And yes- thank goodness the father-in-law came back for the first week.

Looking great and a nice spot too! That looks ideal for a wind and solar setup. Great job!

Remember to get a fire extinguisher and smoke detector. That goes with any structure, but especially one located in nature because fires run longer before they can be put out there.

At my hunting camp, I keep a box cutter in my nightstand so if there was ever a fire in the yurt and it blocked the only door (which it looks like you only have one too), I could quickly slice a hole in the roof to get out.

Not saying any of this to scare you, just so you are prepared.

Keep the pics coming!
