Default roof cover

Hello,
Im new to the forum and, in fact, new to yurts. I am going to attempt to build one for week long camping trips. These will be in the summer, and i dont have live stock so i am opting for canvas over felt. Should the primary roof cover sit on top of the roof ring or should it just sit on the rafters and be butted up against the edge of the ring?

Any help would be great and i apologize if this has been covered somewhere and i missed it.

Dan

Hi Dan,

The cover usually does not sit over the

center ring

, though there is nothing that says it cannot. There are advantages to having it open, such as letting the heat out in the summer.

Clean Air Yurts

has some

camping yurts

you can look at to get some inspiration. Here is their Zephyr model designed for camping in mind.

From what I have read and seen, the center can be covered with another fabric, similar to a rainfly on standard tents.

Here is an image that illustrates what I mean about the second cover (see top of photo):

Yeah, like Jafo says. They usually cover just the top side of the ring, leaving the opening in the middle open, but providing a place to fasten the material at the top side of the ring... Yurt building can be so tricky to make sense of with only words! There are some good books out there about building yurts, and an awesome help for the handbuilt variety is SimplyDifferently.org: Home
Rene has put in some great gifts there with his calculator for lattice, rafters, etc. depending on size.
