Preparing Yurt Location
This week, preparation is beginning on the yurts location. The property where my yurt is going to go is a bit remote. We have never built anything on it. There is an old logging road that goes through a piece of it, which I have hired someone to repair so it can be used to access the yurt. I felt this would put the smallest footprint on the lot since it was already there.
I am not bringing in any outside stone at this time, we are just using fill from the lot itself. At some point I will probably top it off with some stone from a quarry that is about 10 miles away. I didn't want to bring anything in from outside, but I feel that if I don't put a layer of stone down, the fill could run off into a stream over time. The stone will keep this down to a minimum.
Once the road is complete, I have contracted a logger to selectively log out all the mature hardwood and hemlock off the lot. We do this about every 20 years or so to keep the forest managed and healthy. Now is the best time because the spot where I want to put the yurt is all mature hardwood, so clearing it will solve two purposes. The rest of the woods will just be thinned out, in fact, you should barely notice the loggers were there.
Once the logging is done (about 1 week), we will move on to the next step: constructing the yurt platform!
