The painted ring appears to have four layers. I can't quite make out if they cut the mortises before or after assembly. Traditional top bracing and decoration is very nice.

Enjoy the build.

I think I'll chisel the holes into one of my ring layers, then put another (slightly thinner) layer over it; then use plywood for the top wide ring. That way I'll have a comfortable mean to make the holes and also make the whole thing stronger.

How about the wide rim on the posted red ring, how does the owner put the roof tarp over it? Does he just have center hole large enough to pass the whole ring through, then tightens the tarp with some sort of drawstring or something? I'd love to follow this idea, but this is a tough point.

Not too many other guys seem interested in my build.
Anyway, here's a pic of today's continued khana laths staining. Only about 20 left for tomorrow.

Gotta love that rust color. Blued muzzleloader barrels just don't hack it.

Yeah...rather not thinking about about seeing that color on a barrel...I've experienced that too many times at reenacting events...nothing like a damp, misty morning in a tent, when you wake up, check your musket and roar in anger, seeing it wears the "fox camo" now. I'm glad my wheellocks both have non-blued barrel, which in case of extreme rust can be cleaned by fine sanding and polishing, not caring about the blued finish or anything.

Tomorrow we may start drilling and tying the khana. The K-day

I have those two wheellocks (carbine and pistol) for reenactment and couple more BP guns for fun and target shooting.

Today's pics:
all laths stained

Drilling fixture, three at a time plus template lath.

First day of khana tying. Part of it already done, rest will follow.
Tools needed: knife, tightening plate (strap is driven through the hole and the board gives you great leverage and pushing power to really tighten the knot against the lath). Also a "harpoon-awl" to pull the straps through. Quickly forged out of a large nail and simply filed.
