Soapstone is known for it's heat retention and release properties:

Soapstone: The soft rock with incredible heat properties!

That's why many stove manufacturers use it to line their stoves with.

Interesting, thanks. I think I've heard about the Innuits linig their firepits with it. I have rather small pieces, that I use for carving various historical stuff. Not sure if I could find any large blocks around.

I have it inside and outside of my stone. It stays warm long after the fire goes out.

My dinky little 'insert' style wood stove was lined with fire brick bottom sides and back. I pitched it to make the sove volume somewhat bigger. Big mistake. Less mass, and the bottom of the stove warped enough to put a bind on the air intake control. What a dolt. lol

Nice. Putting a pipe through wall makes some things much easier, though it requires well prepared wall section for that.

If you have a traditional one room yurt, as I do, a stove in the middle is advantageous in terms of even heat distribution throughout the yurt. That's a big deal if you have a drafty poorly insulated and sealed yurt like mine. However a side placement is out of the way. A wood stove in a home is rarely situated in the center of the room.

I found out my stove is great if you like roasted sausage for supper.
Which I do! The large door is just above the fire grid, makes roasting easy.
