Default Any New Hampshire yurters here?

I am almost done with my overseas tour and am headed back stateside for at least two years… possibly permanently if I decide to retire early (which is looking more and more attractive as each day goes by). I have family in Western Mass and New Hampshire, and I am thinking of settling down in New Hampshire (in the Cheshire County area). I grew up in the area, and visit almost every year for Christmas, so I’m somewhat familiar with winter conditions, although I haven’t lived there year-round since I was a child.

I’d love to hear from any New Hampshirites here about your yurt experience, such as choosing a yurt,

heating

options, dealing with

moisture

and/or mold... and especially permitting. I don’t have land picked out yet or anything concrete planned, but I’ll be home in July or August and might start planning, looking at land, etc.

Hi from New Hampshire.

We live in Peterborough, but have a 24’ white mountain Yurt in Alexandria.. You are welcome to visit and even stay there.. We heat with a Dutch west wood stove that is more than adequate, as far as other amenities? We are off grid, so we bring in water and have an outhouse.. If you want to meet and check it out, let me know.. I am presently working in China , but will be back next week.

Hi Ivan,

Many thanks for the thoughtful reply and the offer! I would love to come visit your yurt. I'll be back in NH around July, and I'll send you a PM!

Cheers,

MG

Ivan,

In early October we will putting up a 20 foot Pacific Yurt overhere in the western mountains of Maine. We'll be using it as a guest house. We ordered up the full winter and wind package and hope to be using it year-round.

You're welcome to visit.

Would also love to hear from any NH yurters. I know this post is a bit old, but anyone familiar with current regulations on temporary structures? I grew up in Ivan's neck of the woods and haven't lived there for many moons, though any info from NH, VT or ME would be helpful. Not an easy task to research each and every county/town.

You need to check in with the specific town, as they all seem to be different ( a little) In Alexandria there are no building permits,, except for septic which is governed by the state.. Also even in Alexandria they do not consider a Yurt a Temp. Structure, they consider it. Cabin, this is based on tax assessing.. I have in the past reached out via e-mail ( Clovis 19 ) to building assessors or tax assessors in different towns to see how they regard Yurts or “ Alternative structures”, and it is a little different on the tax assessing side. Good luck!
