Gutters on the Yurt Skirt
 

My yurt is in a high snow area and most of the yurts I see for sale do not recommend their water catchment/gutters for places like this.

This is unfortunate. Many of these high snow areas are remote and do not have access to a lot of water, including mine. I have noticed that most of the water goes down the wall and past the skirt and then drips on the ground. Couldn't one of you manufactuers develop a gutter that sits on the skirt? :o I know it will only work if your yurt platform is raised a bit, bit I think most of them are these days.

I would probably buy one of these if they ever become available.

You can use the gutter system 3 seasons, take it down in winter.
Depending on what you are using the water for I would prefer it higher up than around the skirting.

We have had a customer in a similar situation install our Perimeter Gutter System onto the drip edge to capture the water as it runs off the yurt rather than at the top of the wall. Unfortunately I never received any photos.

Woah, you guys are blowing my mind... I hadn't thought about rigging a gutter on the drip edge, but it makes a lot of sense to someone who is a lot more comfortable with screws than H-66 (so far, anyway).

I am trying to find some DIY plans for building a yurt rain gutter system. Does anyone have any suggestions? Pacific Yurts-do you sell these systems individually? I live in Hawaii . -Thanks

Unfortunately we are not able to provide parts or accessories if we did not make the yurt. If your manufacturer does not offer a solution you should try contacting a local gutter company to see if they can help you design something that will fit your needs. Good luck with your project!

drewbergrow, keep us informed on what you come up with. I like the drip edge positioning idea. A thought I had was incorporating some type of low yield heat system while leaving the gutters up where they normally would be. Sure this isnt ideal for the heavy snow, but what if it was able to melt that snow which would:

1. provide you with the water
2. remove the added weight of the snow (which is why I presume the manufactures don't recommend them in climates such as yours?)

I havent thought through how it would work, but its essentially heated gutters or some sort.

We have gutters installed on our Colorado Yurt and collect water into 2000 gallon cisterns which is solar pumped into the sink and shower. We take them down before snow season and put them back up in April. It's not a big deal to do so, but the gutters are crap. Considering yurts are meant to be outside! the gutter brackets, washers and wing nuts are all a plastic that doesn't seem too weather and sun resistant. Many of the brackets have broke and we haven't found a replacement. We replaced all the bolts and wing nuts with metal ones, but unless we find a good bracket system, the metal bolts will outlast the whole system.

Has anybody found a better alternative to the factory plastic gutter brackets?? Thanks!

If you can't find a source, how about making some? If you have a hammer, vise, hacksaw, drill and bits, I'll bet you could make some from 1/2" x 1/8th strap steel from Lowe's or Depot.

Why couldn't you dig a ditch around the out side of the yurt line it with plastic and cover with gravel and route it to an in ground tank.
